Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7, 1840, in Kamsko-Votkinsk, Vyatka, Russia. He was the second eldest of his parents' six surviving offspring. Tchaikovsky's father, Ilya, worked as a mine inspector and metal works manager. He began taking piano lessons when he was just 5 years old.
Tchaikovsky was a prominent Russian composer and conductor during the romantic period. He is known for his many important and famous compositions including the ballets 'swan lake,' and the 'nutcracker'. His orchestral works featured 'Romeo and Juliet', '1812 overture', 'capriccio italien' and 'sympathy no. 6 (pathetique).
Before becoming a composer, Tchaikovsky was trained at an elite school and entered the civil service. In 1863, he became a full-time music student after studying with Anton Rubenstein in 1862 at the st. Petersburg Conservatory School. During the years 1872-76, Tchaikovsky served as a music critic for the Moscow paper. Sadly in 1893, he contracted cholera and died the same year.
His work was first publicly performed in 1865, with Johann Strauss the Younger conducting Tchaikovsky's Characteristic Dances at a Pavlovsk concert.
Tchaikovsky resigned from the Moscow Conservatory in 1878 to focus his efforts entirely on composing. As a result, he spent the remainder of his career composing more prolifically than ever.
